The beauty a lot of people find in a new year is the opportunity to start afresh on a clean slate. While some are of the school of thought that there is no point in making resolutions because they aren’t often seen through, some others still believe in setting goals they plan to achieve in the New Year. Whatever group you belong to, the best way to sticking to New Year resolutions is setting goals that are actually achievable. Here are some tips to help you make your resolutions stick.
Make it Realistic: There is no point in setting goals you can’t achieve. Your resolutions have to be realistic else you’re only setting yourself up to break them. For instance, do not resolve to go on a fruit fast for 21 days when your previous meal choices were pastry and a lot of sugar, you have to take one step at a time by replacing those meals with healthier options you will also enjoy. With time, you’ll gradually take it a notch higher if need be.
Don’t make too Many Resolutions: Even though there might be a thousand things you might want to do you have to choose 4 or 5 of the most important ones and stick to them. An attempt to squeeze every single resolution you have into that year will only take you right back to square one.
Get someone to hold you Accountable: Get a friend you can confide in and tell them about your resolutions. There is a sense of responsibility that comes with knowing you can’t fail your friend. This will keep you pushing. You both might also have similar resolutions which would make it even easier to work towards. For instance, get a workout buddy who is also looking to shed some weight and discuss regularly about your progress.
Eyes on the Prize: You have to keep imagining the end result of your goal, whether it’s more money, a hotter body, a happier family or whatever it might be for you. This is always a great motivation. Pinning pictures of the result you want to see to a board could also be a motivation. This way you are reminded of prize at the end of the race.
Start Now: It’s quite easy to keep procrastinating till it eventually never happens. Don’t wait for another month or a later date to get moving; start right now! Even if it starts with a pen and paper, grab one this minute and begin scribbling. Procrastination is the biggest killer of resolutions.
If you feel like you’re going off track, be sure to go back to the drawing board and get back on track. Always remember that you can achieve anything at all you set your heart to. Have an amazing 2017!
